I have been involved in three proposals in my life-time, but this romantic airport proposal was one of a kind. I have to say that this was the biggest, most-important, nerve-wracking, nail-biting one to date. This was because it was the proposal for my little sister, Nicole (Coly to us). Not only was it to be the biggest day in her life so far, but she also hadn’t seen her man for a year and a half, which is 17 months, also known as exactly 517 days. James has been in South Africa, while Nicole has been in the States. For all this time they have been desperately trying to be in the same country. And while many days were harder than anything they’ve ever done before, they were finally going to be together. So needless to say, this was a big moment. I tried to hold my camera steady as the tears rolled down my face finally seeing these two together again! While to most, the airport seems like an odd spot for a proposal, for these two it was perfect.
On the flight to Boston, Nicole said” Right now our flights are literally flying towards one another.” James was flying in from England to Boston, and we were coming in from Denver. It was the first time in so long they would finally be in the same continent, the same country, and the same time zone. The airport was a common meeting ground, they were finally in the same place, meeting in the middle together. It was the most romantic and sweet thing ever. Coly and I meandered through the crowds, not sure where we would meet James, or if he would be there yet. Coly was frantically searching for him, she could barely speak. He was there, waiting for her in a suit. The moment she saw him, she dropped her bags, and he dropped his too, and took off running faster than I’ve ever seen her run. She launched herself at him, as only a woman desperately in-love can do, and they hugged for so long. The kind of hug that was perfectly happy in all it’s forms.
Then he dropped down to one knee. She was surprised, but mostly too excited to speak. He had memorized the perfect speech and brought out her hand crafted ring. He had used his Grandmothers diamond, and designed the ring to fit Coly perfectly. She of course said yes, and the crowds at baggage claim cheered, clapped and whistled, and of course the pictures below tell the story as well.
